  • The regulator has said online slots businesses must slow down spins and protect players in the fast-growing £2.2bn sector. The online slot machine industry must introduce a series of strict new.

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has announced a raft of changes for online slots. Some of the measures include a spin speed limit, banning autoplay, and no longer allowing features that might portray a loss as a win. The gaming regulator also introduced a ban on reverse withdrawals.

Online gambling operators must ensure that they implement all of the new UKGC measures by October 31, 2021. The commission issued a series of tweets on Tuesday clearly outlining these changes:

The measures follow consultation with slots players, the gambling sector, the public, and other gambling industry-related stakeholders. Their goal is to make online slots safer and less intense, and to better equip players to be in control of their gambling activity.

The UKGC decided to mainly introduce changes to online slots because such games often contain features that lead to various problem gambling risks. This category of games is at the top of the online gambling average loss per player rankings, and by a considerable margin.

A variety of slots-related changes

In terms of the specific changes resulting from this announcement, any features that lead to faster gameplay or give a player the impression that they possess some level of control over the game’s outcome will no longer be allowed.

spin speeds for slots games cannot be lower than 2.5 seconds

The spin speeds for slots games cannot be lower than 2.5 seconds, and autoplay features will cease. Imagery or sounds in a game that might portray that the player is a winner despite their return being less than their original stake will also be illegal.

Gambling operators now have to clearly display the total win/loss during a given online slot playing session, as well as session duration. Finally, players can no longer reverse withdrawals.

The UKGC cited evidence that autoplay features can lead people to engage in multiple forms of gambling at the same time, making it tougher for people to stop gambling and easier to lose track of their play. The allowance of reverse withdrawals tends to tempt players to cancel their payout requests and keep on gambling.

Last year, the UKGC proposed numerous tweaks to the design of online slots. It launched a public consultation on the proposals in July 2020 to act as a basis for the upcoming changes.

Continually striving for a safer environment

As online gambling becomes more and more popular, various UK authorities are continually pushing to create a safer environment for gamblers. UKGC chief executive Neil McArthur noted in this morning’s press release that the goal of the newly announced bans and measures is “to make online games safer”.

help curb the intensity of online gambling”

Minister for Sports, Tourism, and Heritage Nigel Huddleston also commented on the new changes. He said: “Today’s steps will help curb the intensity of online gambling, introducing greater protections that will reduce the risk of gambling related harm.” Huddleston also noted that these measures come at a time when the UK government is conducting a review of current gambling legislation.

UK Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) chief Michael Dugher welcomed the changes, while also noting that “none of these new changes apply to the unsafe, unregulated black market online”. The gambling industry body has already introduced some of its own online slots restrictions.

Other UKGC changes that have come into place over the past year include a ban on the use of credit cards when gambling, improving online ID and age verification checks, and implementing better customer interaction policies. New rules also came into effect in October 2020 in an effort to clamp down on irresponsible VIP gambler programs.

Slot Machine trivia!

There's a boatload of trivia available on this website, so much in fact that it ended up spilling out onto our homepage - here's the best of it!

Location:

Where you are in the world causes variation on how people refer to slot machines, take a look:

  • England: For us here in England, they go by slot machine or even 'fruit machine'.
  • Scotland: Travel north into Scotland and the same beast becomes a 'puggy'.
  • Canada: Stumble into Canada and you'll probably wonder why they prefix 'the' to slots. Unfortunately, we can't help you on the why, but we can confirm it's what the Canadians do. So expect 'the slots' if you're travelling that way.
  • Australia: A trip down under (where slot machines are everywhere) may leave you curious about 'poker machines' or 'pokies'. You guessed it, they're slot machines.

General:

  • The 1981 hit, '3 bells in a row' by Tenpole Tudor and Jools Holland’s, 'Oranges and Lemons Again' (with the verse: 'All three bells in a row') were inspired by Fey’s handy work, the invention of the Liberty Bell. You probably don't need telling that three bells in a row were a great thing for anyone playing.
  • 'BAR', which is famously found on the reels of many a machine, was so named due to a slot machine being developed to vend bars of chewing gum. Three bars in a row would have probably meant minty fresh breath for someone - and yes, we fact-checked that bit too... William Wrigley and Henry Fleer treated the world by mixing mint extracts into chewing gum in 1914.

A Brief (60 seconds) of history...

The internet is full of lengthy, dull guides to slot machines, pure, mindless dross for the most part. However, ours of course (referred to below), is the witty, well-written exception and can be found below! But for those whose interest is more of a fleeting curiosity, we think the next couple of paragraphs should bring you up to speed, speedily.

-In 1894, Charles August Fey cobbled together the first known machine to resemble what we now know as a slot machine. Put more precisely, he created the first-ever, coin-operated gambling machine! Snazzy!

-Skipping a few significant inventions (the meters running), good Ol' Fey knocked together another machine. This one would be known as the Liberty Bell and it was quite a thing to behold. It was the first machine to have bells printed on the reels and marked the pinnacle of Fey's career, in our opinion. More importantly, though, this was the machine that kickstarted further development of slot machines. A catalyst, if you will.

Online

-Next up, a few twists on Fey's handiwork, necessary due to new rules, saw the introduction of a law circumventing slot machine that dispensed chewing gum. More relevant today is the fact that this machine blessed the world with the reel label 'BAR' - a fascinating story that would totally blow our 60 second timer. Throw in the work of Mills Novelty Co and Industry Novelty Co and you get machines with jackpots too. Kerching! (potentially).

-The 70's brought us the video game Pong (yay) and also, courtesy of the Fortune Coin Co, the video slot machine, which later in 1994 became dual screened (enabling bonus rounds).

-The 90's brought us the internet. For the slot machine this meant an eventual move online, bringing us, give or take about a thousand additional developments, to where we are today here at SlotMachine.co.uk
